The Saints - Men's Triples 2020 Ok here we are at the semi finals of the Saints Championship Triples. Our first semi was decided two weeks ago with the other delayed by zone pairs honours to Steven Goddard being runner up in the zone (go Hymn) and rain interrupted play the next week meaning yesterday we knew our finalists. 2020 continues to surprise. Chris Bergman, James Barclay and Peter Shlager vs Michael Gruzin, John Cumming and Chris Wood A tight game on a slow green. As you can see by the card it was an epic battle, with the biggest lead being 6 shots. In the end it came down to the skips with Pistol Pete’s team closing out with a 2 to win 27-26. Your scribe watched a few ends but was down cheering on Steven “Hymn” Goddard and Roddy “Rid” Silber at the Zone Seniors final. The card shows a very close contest. Commiserations Team Wood and well done Team Pistol. Tony Wright, Bob Talbott and Joe Shofer vs Steven Goddard, Greg Smith and Wilson Cheng Another very close game decided again by one shot. 22-21 to Team Wilsonator. Everyone’s uncle and his team came in after a rain delayed game 4 shots down. The telling end was 18 when team uncle held two, the Wilsonator drew on onto the shot bowl. Tiger Smith says “put it in your pocket” and Wilson replies “why” and draws a second shot. Scores were tied at this stage and that it what is called a “big bowl”. Commiserations Team Uncle and congratulations Team Wilson. The final will be played next Saturday 7th Nov with Team Pistol against Team Wilsonator. Good luck chaps, should be a cracker. Peter Russel Memorial Trophy at Neutral Bay An annual event that has been continually held since 1951 as a fours knockout format. Last year the Saints made it to the semis to lose by one shot to Asquith on an extra end. Our team ended up Bronze Medallists winning the “Plate” playoff on the “fantastic plastic” artificial green. 2020 saw David “Gilly” Gill, George Rossettenstein, John “Chooky” Cumming and Chris Carey proudly represent St Ives. The first match was against Lindfield who boasted a strong side that have won the Zone Reserve Fours skipped by Phil Lewis. All four Saints played well and had a sound victory by 8 shots. Gilly was very strong up front and Chooky drew impeccably. The second game was a little more challenging. Hunters Hill had a very strong side having convincingly beaten Lane Cove. 3 ends and its 2-1 then the HH skip moves the jack for a 7, 9-1 after 3 ends. Lots of positive talk and some individual bowls saw our team right in the mix, clawing our way back to a 2 shot differential on the 19th end (17-19) until the 20 end, we dropped a 2 and it was 17-21 to HH. HH throw a medium to nothing length and when the skips go to the mat the Saints are holding 2, measure for 3. HH Skip draws with good weight but is tight and knocks our possible 3rd shot in the count. CC draws a 4th, HH skip draws but is narrow and misses the head. CC to John C “ we holding 4?” “Yes” “OK”. CC calmly draws for a 5th shot, no pressure (yeah right!!) Saints win 22-21. Saints are winners and into the semi against Belrose. This is a great result for our club and continues to raise our standing in the region. Champion of Champion Pairs Our club Pairs Champions Rod Silber and Chris Carey will be representing the mighty Saints next Saturday 7th November in the Champion of Champions Zone Pairs being held at Belrose. Good luck to the boys, play well, play strong and may the luck be with you (you have to have luck as this is not an Olympic sport). Roving Saints Reporter Chris (Scarey) Carey
