Winners and finalists of this year's Men's Club tournaments were recognized yesterday at the Club's Presentation Day and the Chairman of the Club also announced & presented the Dick Carey "Bowler of the Year Trophy" to our winner Chris Carey.
What a thrill it must have been for Chris when the Chairman of the Club announced that he had won the trophy donated by his late father for the outstanding male or female player who excelled in club events. In a narrow win over last year's Champion Fred Alexander, Chris had made the 2017 finals of all four championship disciplines with wins in the Singles & Fours and Runners up titles in the Pairs & Triples. Fred won the Pairs, Triples & Fours but was bundled out in the first round of the Singles. The final scores were Chris Carey first on 16 points, Fred Alexander second with 15 points and third Wilson Cheng on 13 points. This award has been available for the past six years and it's interesting to note that both the women and men have won it three times each - 2017 Chris Carey, 2016 Fred Alexander, 2015 Di McBryde, 2014 Jan Woodcock & Karen Jones, 2013 Judy Bain and the inaugural event in 2012, Bob Leonard. Note that no one individual has won it on multiple occasions ... as yet! Congratulations to all players who were recognized at yesterday's presentation for all club events. And, as an aside, it was also wonderful to have enjoyed the membership presentation to our newest members of the club who have now joined us from Gordon Bowling Club. On behalf of the President, the Board and all members may we welcome each and every one of you and wish you happy bowling and friendship for many years to come. The Gordon clubs last hoorah will be on Saturday the 16th - a sad occasion after 56 years. David Hagley |
