Our very first Sunday Live went off like a cracker! More than 120 patrons turned out to enjoy a relaxing Sunday afternoon to listen to local artists Phil Stuart-Jones and Penny Howell sing and play their way through not only the oldies and the goodies but also some current hits. With drinks, food and refreshments at cheap club prices, available in our relaxed club atmosphere, who could ask for any more on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The best advertisement for the day came from one of our guests who commented on Facebook after the event : "So good to have a family friendly place to go to and see out the weekend with a good "pub" meal, some live tunes and a drink. St Ives really needs this. I nearly fell over when we walked in and saw other families with young kids and when my 3 year old started dancing around to the music she didn't get frowned at by anyone. #relief. We will be back." As Molly Meldrum would say ... "Do yourself a favour and block these February dates out for our next Sunday Live at the St Ives Club!" - Sunday, 4th February 4-6pm - see wonderful solo local artist Neville Kaye - an acoustic/electronic artist who focuses intently on song craft, creative story telling (sometimes biographical), melody and harmony. And, - Sunday, 18th February 4-6pm - featuring excellent local artists Morelli and Wright - playing a mix of originals and classic songs from the 70s until the present. Remember, "be there .... or be square!" David Hagley, Monday, 15 January 2018
Three teams of three rinks of fours (3's, 5s and Sixes) battled it out for the George Griffith Trophy against Newport on a very, very hot and windy Saturday 13th January. At the end of a difficult day, the score was a 173 shot draw and St Ives retained the trophy for another year as we were the current title holders. At Newport our grade 3 team ended up with a rink and a half each but the home team prevailed by 10 shots on the main board. The 5s played at home and won the big board by 4 shots, again 1 win rink a draw and a loss to both clubs and the 6s, at Newport again, were winners 2 rinks to 1, with a 6 shot winning margin to complete the drawn Trophy event. 173 shots a piece - 4 wins, 2 drawn and 3 loss rinks to St Ives versus 3 wins, 2 drawn and 4 losses to Newport in a keenly contested event. As one of the bright sparks said as he trudged wearily out of the gate after being advised of the Trophy draw ... "We really didn't have to play the game at all. We could have been sitting in air conditioned splendour sipping on a couple of beers all afternoon!" But ....... that's not how it works! All in all a good start to the season And, can I remind all bowlers to ensure that they are well hydrated before and during bowls in these heat wave conditions. Your health and safetly is the club's primary concern. David Hagley, Monday, 15 January 2018
The Cyril South tournament is a grade 3-7, annual event hosted by Killara whereby 9 invited clubs play 3 rinks of triples on various dates against the "home" Killara team. The four highest margin winning teams then go through to the semis (1v4 and 2v3) and the winners of these play off in the final for the trophy. St Ives in the past has achieved great success in the tournament and we are, in fact, the current title holders. Our first round game against Killara was played on Wednesday 10th January and all three rinks won well to achieve a 75- 36 result - a plus 39 shot result. Based on previous years this +39 shot margin result should easily assure us of a semi final spot later in the year. Well done guys. |
