"It's a game of two halves" is a well-worn sporting cliché but it was an appropriate description for yesterday's Men's Triples Final where Rod Silber's side overcame an 8-shot deficit to run down Fred Alexander's side to take the 2019 title. Conditions were almost perfect with a sunny day and a fairly quick green but the players did have to combat a gusty southerly down the rink for most of the afternoon.
Fred Alexander's side (comprising Richard Lander and Peter Shlager) got off to a fast start taking 4 shots on the first end. They continued to have the edge building up to a 13-5 advantage after 10 ends. In the middle phase of the game Rod's side (with Richard Carey leading and Chris Carey playing second) just started to cut into that advantage without ever getting their noses in front. After 20 ends Fred's side still had a 3-shot lead, 18-15. In the home stretch it was Rod's side who found another gear with the skip producing some marvellous last bowl heroics. They won 4 ends in a row to lead 23-18 with 5 ends to play and this proved decisive. Starting the last end Fred's side needed 6 to tie but it was Rod & co who had the last say taking two shots for an impressive 28-20 victory. Congratulations to all the players in an exciting final match. Our B Grade side played its final match of the Zone 9 Mid-Week Challenge for 2019. Our hopes for perhaps a runners-up finish were dealt a heavy blow by yesterday's opponents Avalon Beach. The match was played on our own green but the visitor's established handy leads on two rinks whilst the third (skipped by Bruce Mason) were neck-and-neck all the way. The end result was disappointment on all three rinks with the "big board" showing a loss, 72-86 (0 pts to 6).
St Ives finished sixth out of seven teams on the final ladder with a 2 win, 3 loss, 1 draw record. Avalon Beach's win took them into the runners-up spot (squeaking past Mosman on shot difference) and they will playoff against Dee Why in the B Grade Final at Harbord BC next week. It was a very exciting day today at the annual St Ives Fives event. The St Ives Womens Club has been running this event since 1993 but St Ives has never won the trophy - UNTIL TODAY!
Our team of Di McBryde, Jan Woodcock, Rhonwen Martin, Shizuko Hashimoto and Vicki Bartrop played beautifully to win all four of their games - the only team to win four games on the day. We are really proud of our winners - well done ladies. The St Ives trio of Chris Bergman, Fred Alexander & Wilson Cheng were in action in the State Senior Triples event over the weekend, played at Ettalong Memorial BC.
Two matches were played on Friday with the team narrowly losing their opening sectional match 23-26 to Westport before bouncing back with a thumping 34-10 victory over Gulong. On Saturday, Wilson & co. performed creditably in a 18-25 loss to Tuncurry Beach, skipped by Rex Johnston. The second Semi-Final in the Men's Triples championship was played on Saturday. A strong performance from Richard Carey, Chris Carey and Rod Silber saw them go through to the final with a 30-16 win against Ross Yates, Sam Johnston & John Swann. Their opponents in the final will be Richard Lander, Peter Shlager & Fred Alexander.
The Men's Club AGM will be held at 10 am on Saturday, 19th October 2019. The Notice of Meeting can de downloaded/viewed here.
Well the rain had the last laugh in Round 6 of the Zone 9 Mid-Week Challenge with all matches in the area abandoned.
In Grade B there is still one round to play with St Ives at home to Avalon Beach next Wednesday. There is still a possibility for St Ives to finish as runner-up although results will very definitely have to go their way. Our two Grade C sides have finished their schedule, both missing out on post-sectional play this time around. St Ives (1) finished with a 3-2-1 record, good enough for second place on the ladder behind Lindfield Rollers (1). St Ives (2) accumulated a 2-3-1 record to finish third behind the unbeaten Balgowlah and West Pymble. The Bowls NSW State Championships begin this Friday at Ettalong Memorial BC. It's tremendous for St Ives to be represented as our Senior Triples Zone Champions- Chris Bergman, Fred Alexander & Wilson Cheng- take the green this weekend. On Friday there will two sectional games and on Saturday the final sectional game plus (with luck) the semi-final. The Final will be played on Sunday.
Good luck chaps! Bowls NSW has announced that it will be live streaming the State Championships from September 22nd to 28th. In addition Fox Sports will be presenting a one-hour highlights feature showcasing the singles final. More details on the championships can be found here.
