On Wednesday 25th November the final of the 2020 Men's Handicap Singles was played.
Ross Yates in his first of these finals was up against Chris Carey who had won the title on multiple occasions. Chris was giving away Ross 7 shots to start with. Its hard to run down 7 shots in 21 ends as Chris was to find out. By end 11 Chris had reduced the deficit to 3 shots. Despite putting pressure on Ross throughout, Chris never got closer than that. Ross won by two shots to put a new name on the trophy. Well done to both players for a good tight match. We have now completed two rounds of Consistency Singles with some interesting results. Quarter finals are next.
What a great game today between Di McBryde with Ali Banfield against Rhonwen Martin with Carol Whitehead. Di and Ali got off to strong start by playing short ends. Then Carol and Rhonwen played longer ends and started to catch up. However, Ali & Di held their nerves to win 25:12. The shot of the day was from Di when opponents were holding 5 or 6 and she came in to take the jack and stay with it. What a great result for Ali who has only been playing for a couple of months.
The semi finals of the handicap pairs were played on Tuesday 10th. Carol Whitehead and Rhonwen Martin defeated David Glaser and Judy Milton. Ali Banfield and Di McBryde defeated Nancy Smith and Vicki Bartrop in a game of mulitiple dead ends.
On Saturday our club pairs champs “Rocket“ Roddy Silber and Chris “Scarey” Carey proudly represented the Saints at Harbord in the Champion of Champions Zone Pairs. They had an easy draw (yeah right) playing their first game against North Sydney’s Allan Coy and Kenta Treacher. Allan is very handy, leading in the 1’s and 2’s and Kenta, well if you don’t know he is the current Zone 9 Singles Champion, Interntional player for Japan, silver medalist in the Asia PAC bowls (beat Mark Casey’s Aussie team) and a very nice chap. So our boys knew they needed to be on their game, and they were.
Wining the first seven ends with singles they were up and looking good. They they dropped a 3 and a four and it was even. The game then went shot for shot until the 18th when CC trails the jack for 2 and it was 15 all. The Saints then built an impressive head on a short end holding four when North’s lead drew the shot. CC calmly took the North’s bowl out and stayed for 5. Kenta runs through the head. CC covers the back and Kenta pulls up short on a draw. 5 to the Saints, 20-15 St Ives. North’s pick up a 2 and need 3 to tie on the last. A great head with lots of bowls close saw North’s Skip run with us last and score a single after CC covered the back. 20-18 to the Saints. A great result for our boys against a top team playing on the rink next to their opponents who seemed to have a much easier game. Roddy and Chris are up against Herbie Bremner and Geoff Hamilton form Turramurra at 8:45 tomorrow. Go the Saints. Steve Goddard, Greg Smith & Wilson Cheng took out the Men's Triples on Saturday 7th November by 26-20. It was a hard fought game with Pete Shlagers team getting an early lead but in the end Wilson & Co prevailed. Congratulations to the winners. Commiserations to Chris, Jim and Pete. Hopefully some photos to come. The Draw for the Men's fours and the Men's Handicap Singles are shown below. Handicap singles has reached the semi-final. The Fours have reached round 2. |
