Stop Press: Tiger wins the Zone Reserve Singles
In a dominant display of draw bowling Greg "Tiger" Smith today won the Zone Reserve Singles. Our Last winner of Zone reserve singles was Jim Rose in 2002 followed by some Carey bloke being runner up in 2007! Greg comfortably won his semi-final against J Lloyd of Lane Cove 31-15. Tiger then played Scott Burrows of Asquith in a tightly contested and long game in the final. Your scribe was not at the event but had a text link up with Trevor Whitehead. The first update saw Greg up 22-15. Asquith picks up a 2. The next end was very tight, with Tiger collecting a single 23-17 Tiger, still close. Burrows fights back with a single, he's not going away 23-18. Telstra lines go down and the next update is 27-18 Greg, then 28-18. Things are looking good for Greg but never touch the trophy until you win. Singles swapped and it's 29-20. A single to Asquith then the hammer blow, a 2 to Greg and it's all over 31-21 Greg Smith. Congratulations Greg, your club is proud of you. This is a fantastic result and the second title for the mighty Saints in 2021 on the back of the Senior Fours. St Ives is not a big club compared to others in our zone and playing 3-6 grade pennants we don't necessarily have the top players in the zone but what we have is spirit, determination, and a will to get better week to week. We are now seeing the fruits of the hard work that we are putting in. The Friday coaching days are a good example. Let's keep it up Saints. Well done Greg and the beers are on us this weekend at the home of the Saints. Report by Chris "Scarey" Carey aka The Saint

On Wednesday 7th April Ross and Trevor battled it out for the Mens Minor Singles title.
It was a gripping game, watched closely from the adjoining rinks of social players. Trevor got out to an early start and was 3-0 after 4 ends. After 6 ends it was 4-4. It was clear that both players wanted to win this one - you could see their careful preparation for each shot. Ross got ahead and was leading 16-10 by end 15. Trevor was not finished and by end 20 Trevor was ahead by 1 shot 19-18. Then Ross got a 4 to lead 22-19. Stll Trevor was not finished and by end 28 it was 25-24 to Trevor. This time Ross maintained his run and came out the winner by 31-25. Geoff Rose was the marker and kept us all informed on the other rinks by holding up the blue or red paddles at the completion of each end. He had the box seat for this great game. Well marked Geoff! A fantastastic game of great quality bowls. Congratulations to Ross and commiserations to Trevor. Well done Gentlemen |
