The Semi-Finals of the Mens Fours Championship were held on Saturday. Four very talented teams in action and one incredibly close finish! The four of Tom McKelvey, Tim Walton, Chris Wood & Bruce Mason had a strong win in their semi-final against David Stubing, Andrew Murphy, Chris Bergman & Jock Currie. The final score was 26-11. The other semi-final was a real nail-biter, going down to the last end. The final score was 24-23 in favour of Peter Shalger, Bob Talbot, George Rosettenstein & Jim Barclay. Tremendous credit goes to the losers: Nigel Blackburn, Richard Hunt, Sam Johnston & Dudley Wrigley. The final will be played on November 10th.
Two matches in the Consistency Singles were played today. One was a semi-final between Vicki Bartrop and Margaret Ledbury where Vicki won. The second match was a quarter final between Anne Cowlishaw and Marion Pacey where Anne won. Both matches were close and were great to watch. Just to catch-up on events over the past month in Zone 9:-
Gerard Coggans 29 October 2018 After rain delays and some competitors playing away (representing St Ives in inter-club competitions), we finally managed another day of play in the Womens Consistency Singles. There were some very close and exciting matches - of particular note was the match between Rhonwen Martin and Margaret Ledbury where the score was 125 all so an extra end had to be played. Congratulations to Margaret for making it through. The other close game was Vicki Bartrop vs Di McBryde where Vicki came in the winner. Congratulations to the winners in all the matches. As always, please contact the Selectors if you have any issues with availability.
The weather relented (at least it didn't rain) for Round 3 of the Midweek Challenge. The results indicated a tough day at the office for St Ives' sides.
In A Grade, St Ives lost at home to Harbord 68-43 (6 pts to 0) while the B Grade side playing at home to Turramurra went down 91-45 (6 pts to 0). It was a little closer for the C Grade side playing away at Turramurra but they also went down 62-45 (5 pts to 1). The bright spot for the day came from D Grade who won handily at home against Turramurra 79-52 (5 pts to 1). Gerard Coggans 25 October 2018 The Final of the 2018 Mens Triples Championship was played out on Saturday. After a week of rain, conditions were hot & humid for the final. The match began in sunshine but with threats of thunderstorms to come later in the day. Peter Shalger's side (who had an extra-end win in the semi-final against Joe Shofer's side) had to field a substitute, with Tim Walton replacing Peter Larcombe. Their opponents, Rod Silber's side, had come into the final on the back of three convincing wins in earlier rounds. So the lineup for the final was Tony Wright, Chris Carey & Rod Silber vs Tim Walton, Jim Barclay & Peter Shlager. The game was tight early on but on end 8 Rod Silber's side gained a 5 to go ahead 11 shots to 4. That saw Peter Shalger's team edge their way back into contention, winning 6 ends in a row to take a narrow 14-11 lead after 14 ends. End 22 was a major turning point in the match with Peter Shalger's side gaining a 6 to edge in front 22-18. Rod Silber took 3 shots on end 23 to narrow the gap to 1 shot but then Peter, Jim & Tim racked up 9 shots on the next three ends. The match ended after 27 ends with a 31-22 win for the 2018 Mens Triples champions: Tim Walton, Jim Barclay & Peter Shlager. Congratulations to our winners & commiserations to the runners-up. Our last free training session as part of the Be Connected program is next Thursday 25th October from 2pm to 3pm at our club. All members and friends are invited. This is a unique opportunity to get one-on-one help for your devices (laptop, mobile or tablet) at no cost to you.
All that is required in return is for each member to sign up on the Be Connected site to ensure Bowls Australia meets their grant obligations. We will also gather your feedback on this pilot to further shape the service before Bowls Australia rolls it out to other clubs to increase digital literacy in members. |
