Weren't we lucky with the weather - heaving rain was forecast for the Ladies Xmas Lunch last Thursday but it held off long enough for us to bowl during the morning. We then came in for a delicious lunch. It was lovely to see so many non bowlers join us for lunch and the annual presentations.

After a rain-disrupted competition the Zone 9 Midweek Challenge finally reached its finale on Wednesday at Harbord & Belrose bowling clubs. After the washout last week this meant that in Grade C, both semi-finals and final were played back-to-back.
St Ives were represented by our C Grade side who took on Lindfield Rollers at Belrose. After a brave contest unfortunately we went down 57 to 65. Well done everyone for making it through the section! The results of all the finals were:-
The final club competition for 2018 was contested on Sunday in not the easiest of conditions- 30 degrees plus temperatures and winds gusting over 40 km/h. The two teams were Di McBryde, Jim Barclay & Rod Silber taking on Jan Woodcock, Tony Wright & Graham Hancock.
Graham's side had the edge in the early ends always keeping their noses in front. Rod's side engineered a couple of big scores on ends 10 & 11 to level the scores again at 12-12. Di, Jim & Rod managed to win 5 ends in a row culminating in a 5 on end 17 leaving them with a nice 23-13 lead. They held that 10 shot lead through to end 19 and, although Graham's team won the last two ends, it was Rod's side that took the day & the championship 26 shots to 21. Congratulations to the winners & commiserations to the runners-up. The 2018 Dick Carey Bowler of the Year Trophy was awarded to Jim Barclay after an outstanding set of results in club competitions this year. Jim was in the winning side in the Mens Triples, Mixed Triples (n.b. played on Dec. 2) & Mixed Fours and runner-up in the Mens Fours & Major Singles.
The Major Singles winner was Wilson Cheng who, in a short address, expressed his thanks to a number of other members who had supported his development as a bowler. The full honours list for 2018 was:- |
