For those who have long memories we thought it appropriate to reinstate what was an institution last century, Rink Side Ramblings, updated for the 21st century, online not printed on A4. This weekend saw the start of the Championship Pairs. It was very pleasing to see 22 teams enter with many new players having their first crack at this prestigious tournament. There were some interesting combinations and match ups. With so many games we won’t attempt to cover all in detail as your scribe’s game was the only one on Green No 2 so I only saw snippets of a few. There were plenty of shots scored and some high-quality games. One I did see a bit of was the one behind me, current two times Champions Tim Walton and Peter Larcombe against Trevor Whitehead and Michael Macourt. The Champs went out to a big lead bagging a 6 on one end and it looked all over mid-way through but when you combine two very good draw bowlers you never know. Trevor and Michael didn’t give up and fought back from a 10-shot deficit to narrowly lose 28-26. Another match up saw Bob Talbot and everyone’s Uncle Joe Shofer up against Greg Smith and Steven Goddard. Again, this was close at the start but the very experienced Team Shofer put the foot down and jumped out to a strong lead. Tiger and Hymn tried their best, but experience won out in the end, 26-19 to Bob and Joe. Another close one was the Rose Brothers against new bowler Paul De Bruyen and Roger Demarchelier. Great to see Harley and Geoff playing together and they did well but ultimately went down in a close match 21-19 to Paul and Roger. Round 2 next week sees some good match ups - so get to the club early. Chris Carey
