Saturday saw wet & blustery conditions for the Zone Fours competitions. The State Fours event was hosted at Harbord BC whilst the Senior Fours went on at Belrose BC and St Ives was the venue for the Reserve Fours. St Ives had representatives in all three events.
In the State Fours both our sides lost their first round matches. John Cumming's side (Greg Smith, Andrew Murphy & Mike Heath) went down 17-24 to G. Sheed (Willoughby Park) and Chris Carey's team (Rod Silber, Peter Shlager and Jim Barclay) lost 21-28 to S. Owen (Dee Why). The Senior Fours was notable for a very unfortunate draw for St Ives. With 19 entries most teams got a bye into Round 2 but both the St Ives' fours were drawn against each other in Round 1! So it was Wilson Cheng's side (Noel McKenzie, Peter Larcombe & Fred Alexander) up against George Rosettenstein's team (Tony Wright, Bob Talbot & Bruce Mason). In a very tight, low-scoring game it was Wilson's four that came up trumps winning 18-14. In the afternoon Wilson's side were on deck against J. Lancaster (Warrawee) and once again had the victory with a score of 23-13 to qualify for the quarter finals at Harbord BC on Sunday. In the Reserve Fours, John Swann's team (Trevor Whitehead, Graeme Manning & Ross Yates) had the advantage of playing on home turf. With a bye in Round 1 the St Ives boys squeaked home in Round 2 beating G. Ellis (Avalon Beach) 19-17. John's team will play in the quarter finals at Harbord BC on Sunday.
