The JudgeIt invitational Pairs were held last Sunday and what a great day it was. The event opened the 38th annual Tapner Tournament, a fixture in Zone 9 and Metro Sydney that any good bowler doesn’t want to miss. 40 teams, in 10 sections of 4, fighting it out for $3,500 in prize money. Our club is very appreciative of the support of other clubs and bowlers in entering this tournament, we were over subscribed which is a good sign for bowls in our zone.
The quality of the teams was of the highest standard; we had several Commonwealth Games medallists, a current Australian Jackaroo, many of our current Zone Open and Seniors team members, past zone players, as well as top bowlers from the Sydney Metro area. The format of 3 bowl pairs over 12 ends with 3 sectional games and a winners play winners final game was very well received. The day also saw the first game played on the Saints new tiff dwarf green, by all reports very true and with a month or two it will have great finish and speed. Our Sectional winner’s games were Roger Manning and Jim Dowd against Mark Prosper and Mark Goddard, John Veteman and Richard Wise against Steve Ashdown and Brad Franklin, Alan McMaster and Steve Gliddon against Tim Walton and Peter Larcombe, Chris Carey and Adam Glew against Phil Heath and Robert Balfas, and Graham Wong and Brad Landi against Steve Lowe and James Browne. As it does in these events with 5 undefeated teams it all came down to margins. First place and $2,000 richer Alan McMaster and Steve Gliddon +50 Second place and $1,000 richer Chris Carey and Adam Glew +45 Third place and $500 richer Graham Wong and Brad Landi +36 This was a great day and the Saints hope to make this an annual “must play” in a bowler’s calendar.
