After a sunny start to the day in Round 2 of the Midweek Challenge, mid-afternoon squalls washed out a couple of the matches. In the two games that did finish St Ives came out on the wrong side of the result.
In A Grade our pairs lost to a strong Belrose (2) side 78-34 (6 points to 0) and in B Grade our triples lost narrowly to Mosman 80-71 (5 points to 1). Our teams in C & D Grades were both winning handily when the rains came; neither match was able to resume. Gerard Coggans 18 October 2018

The updated draw for the 2018 Mixed Triples Championship is shown below following the Round 1 matches played on Sunday. ![]()
Rain gear was the order of the day for Round 1 of the Mens Fours championship on Saturday. Green #2 was slow after all the rain of preceding days (and the afternoon itself!) but that didn't stop there being four very tense contests. ![]()
The weather outside was grey and wet but the spring/summer fashions inside were bright and pretty. Around 100 ladies enjoyed the company, fashions, champagne and sandwiches. What a great day it was!
Many thanks to the models and many helpers. With Round 1 completely washed out right across the Zone due to Wednesday's rain, the competition should get underway next week with the Round 2 fixtures. The teamsheet is below. Please contact the selectors if you have any issue with availability. St Ives hosted the annual Rose Bowl challenge against Turramurra today. Five teams of fours from each club played. The weather gods smiled on us - it was certainly great to be out on the green after all the recent wet weather. Unfortunately St Ives didn't fare so well with the bowls - Turramurra won the trophy by 8 points across the five games so the trophy returns to Turramurra after several years in St Ives hands.

Persistent, tricky wind conditions kept the competitors on their toes in the 2018 Mixed Pairs Championship Final. The competing teams were Jenni Bradley & Mike Heath taking on Shizuko Hashimoto & Chris Carey.
The early going was very close but then on the 9th end Hashimoto/Carey got a 4 to lead 11-4. That spurred Bradley/Heath onto a run of winning ends & they reversed that lead, taking a 16-11 advantage. This was always likely to be a close match and so it proved with the score being tied at 17-all after 17 ends. On the home straight it was Mike & Jenni who got across the line winning the match 21-18. Congratulations to the winners Jenni & Mike and commiserations to Shizuko & Chris for a fine effort as runners-up. |
