The semi-finals of the 2019 Men's Handicap Pairs were played today.
David Bottomley and Gerry Hurdwell took on Trevor Whitehead and Peter Shlager on Rink 11. With a headstart of 8 shots, Gerry's team kept ahead until the 10th end. Then Peters team got on a run to lead 22 -19 by end 17. Gerry's team clawed back the deficit to level at 22-22 on end 20. However a 5 on end 21 took Peter & Trevor over the line and into the final. On rink 9 Greg Smith and Chris Bergman took on Andrew Murphy and Mike Heath. Both teams were on 15 handicap so no advantage to either. Chris' team got off to a flyer and were 7-4 up by end 7. Then Mike's team went on a run, winning 5 ends in a row to go 14-7 ahead by end 12. A 6 on end 15, when Mike took out the only opposing bowl in the head, gave his team a lead of 20-9. From then on Mike's team were in charge, winning 26-18. The final will be held on Sunday 1st December. Trevor Whitehead/Peter Shlager v Andrew Murphy/Mike Heath

St Ives triumphed in today's Bicentennial Trophy contest against West Pymble. With three rinks in action at each venue an exciting match was in prospect. At St Ives we welcomed a old stalwart in Jock Currie who gave a most welcome set of introductory remarks before play commenced. St Ives jumped out to an early lead but had to withstand a late fightback by the visitors. St Ives also came away victorious away from home and the overall big board score was 123-110.
Greg Smith accepted the trophy on behalf of SIBC. Well done to all who participated today.
Greg Smith's form in this year's Handicap Singles competition has been top grade but yesterday's Final pitched him against the wily talents of Joe Shofer.
Greg had a 6-shot advantage on handicap and jumped on that advantage early to be up 11-0 after 3 ends. Joe got himself back in the game, taking four of the next six ends. However Greg still had a handy 15-7 lead after 9 ends. From this point Greg's control over the match reasserted itself as he won five ends in a row to stretch his advantage to 22-7. This was too big a lead even for Joe and the match ended after 18 ends with Greg Smith a deserving winner. The final score was 24-11. St Ives maintained its strong record against Turramurra BC yesterday winning the Ron Christie Trophy event. St Ives won four of the matches, drew one and lost just one. The aggregate score was 123 - 99. Bowling at both venues was heavily affected by a really strong and gusty wind that caused some frustrations to all the players.
At home our top grade side, skipped by Chris Carey, had a handy 22-15 win whilst Wes Taylor's B Grade rink was pushed all the way but held on for a 23-22 victory. In C Grade Dudley Wrigley's four had an impressive 24-9 result. Over at Turramurra the top rink (skipper Jimmy Barclay) had a frustrating 14-14 draw in their match. In B Grade Greig Cohen's side were involved in a really close tussle before suffering a disastrous setback. Leading 15-14 after 16 ends St Ives gave up 3 shots on the next end to trail 15-17 and then gave up eight more on the next end- that as they say was that! Final score was a loss 17-27. Once again though the C Grade rink picked up the slack with a 23-12 win for Gerry Hurdwell's side. The Men's Bowling Club AGM was held yesterday morning officiated by our President, Kevin Latham and Secretary, Michael Macourt. No ballots were necessary to determine the officers & other positions with confirmation of those agreeing to serve:-
Chris Wood The meeting noted that Mike Gallagher would be succeeding Alwyn Ellem as Chairman of Coaches. Grateful thanks to Alwyn for all his hard work in this important area. The meeting also approved the proposed change to the constitution, agreeing to delete clause 4.3.
"It's a game of two halves" is a well-worn sporting cliché but it was an appropriate description for yesterday's Men's Triples Final where Rod Silber's side overcame an 8-shot deficit to run down Fred Alexander's side to take the 2019 title. Conditions were almost perfect with a sunny day and a fairly quick green but the players did have to combat a gusty southerly down the rink for most of the afternoon.
Fred Alexander's side (comprising Richard Lander and Peter Shlager) got off to a fast start taking 4 shots on the first end. They continued to have the edge building up to a 13-5 advantage after 10 ends. In the middle phase of the game Rod's side (with Richard Carey leading and Chris Carey playing second) just started to cut into that advantage without ever getting their noses in front. After 20 ends Fred's side still had a 3-shot lead, 18-15. In the home stretch it was Rod's side who found another gear with the skip producing some marvellous last bowl heroics. They won 4 ends in a row to lead 23-18 with 5 ends to play and this proved decisive. Starting the last end Fred's side needed 6 to tie but it was Rod & co who had the last say taking two shots for an impressive 28-20 victory. Congratulations to all the players in an exciting final match. The second Semi-Final in the Men's Triples championship was played on Saturday. A strong performance from Richard Carey, Chris Carey and Rod Silber saw them go through to the final with a 30-16 win against Ross Yates, Sam Johnston & John Swann. Their opponents in the final will be Richard Lander, Peter Shlager & Fred Alexander.
